Virtual Reality Overview

What is Virtual Reality?

Virtual reality is the term used to describe a three-dimensional, computer generated environment which can be explored and interacted with by a person. That person is immersed within this environment, giving the impression that the person is really there, and can perform a series of actions within this virtual world. It has both entertainment and serious uses. If you want to understand VR in more detail, read this article – What is Virtual Reality.

What is a Virtual Reality Headset?

A VR headset is a device that you wear over your eyes like a pair of goggles. It blocks out all external light and shows you an image on a high-definition screen in front of your eyes.

The goal of the VR headset is to immerse you in the virtual reality environment and world. VR headsets track your head movement, so that when you move your head to look around, your view in the virtual environment moves too. This allows you to be completely immersed in the virtual world.

Practice public speaking or for a presentation with the realistic VR audience

This image is an example of what you would see inside a VR headset. As you move your head, your view of the conference room changes, giving you the impression you are inside the room.

How do VR Apps help with Public Speaking?

VR apps immerse you in a realistic environment where you can practice. You can train in different situations with animated audiences – a much better way to practice than in front of a mirror and more convenient that presenting to a colleague or friend. Try the VirtualSpeech app and test your skills in front of a real audience.

Many VR Headsets use a Mobile Phone

A very popular VR headset is the Google Cardboard, with 5 million sold by January 2016. It’s a low cost (£10-20) VR viewer that anyone can build or buy. Your mobile phone is inserted into the viewer and with specially designed lenses, your mobile screen creates the virtual experience.

A History of the World

In this truly global journey, Andrew Marr revisits some of the traditional epic stories, from classical Greece and Rome to the rise of Napoleon, but surrounds them with less familiar material, from Peru to the Ukraine, China to the Caribbean. He looks at cultures that have failed and vanished, as well as the origins of today’s superpowers, and finds surprising echoes and parallels across vast distances and epochs. This is a book about the great change-makers of history and their times, people such as Cleopatra, Genghis Khan, Galileo, and Mao, but it is also a book about us.
